Carla, an intelligence officer with the Spanish National Intelligence Center (CNI), is the story's central figure. At 36, she's a seasoned veteran, hardened by her time in the Army's Parachute Brigade and years of operations with the CNI. Tall, athletic, and in peak physical condition, she possesses a striking allure that "screams danger wherever she goes." She usually wears her brown hair pulled back in a ponytail, and her eyes convey the mixture of determination and emotional exhaustion characteristic of someone who has spent too much time teetering on the brink. Her analytical mind works faster the more desperate the situation, a skill that has brought her out of Afghanistan, Morocco, Vietnam, and countless other impossible scenarios alive.
Her defining trait—and the driving force behind much of the plot—is that "damn intuition" that is almost never wrong and drives her superiors to distraction. She is fiercely loyal to those she considers her own, and incapable of turning a blind eye when she senses injustice, even if it costs her lives, a burden she will carry forever on her conscience. Beneath the cold, calculating exterior lies a woman who handles peace, family affection, and calm far worse than adrenaline and risk, and who carries the burden of having lost people she loved in her crusade to find the truth.
A field agent for the National Intelligence Center (CNI) and Carla's operational partner, Rodrigo is her constant companion. Young, athletic, and attractive, he moves with the ease of someone equally comfortable in a shootout or driving an armored car. He usually dresses discreetly—chinos, dark polo shirts, a light jacket that conceals the shoulder holster of his HK USP—and shares Carla's fondness for listening to music while working, especially behind the wheel.
Beyond his tactical prowess, what truly defines Rodrigo is his character: loyal, kind, patient, and possessing a dry wit that helps to ease the tension that always surrounds Carla.
As director of Spain's National Intelligence Center, Castaño is the father figure and professional role model around whom Carla has revolved for years. He arrived at the position as a temporary solution after the events of November 23rd and remains there, two years later, trying to clean up the mess left by former president Antonio Pérez and his associates. He lives in a gated community in La Moraleja with his wife Claudia and their children, and he appears increasingly worn down by the position: new wrinkles on his forehead, a tired expression, and the growing feeling of "getting too old for this job."
His relationship with Carla is one of the emotional heart of the book: they argue, they exasperate each other—"I'm so fed up with your fucking intuition, Carla"—and yet, they are the two people the other trusts most. It was he who, as deputy director, decided to believe in her after the Vietnam incident and authorize the investigation that would start it all. Ultimately, he is a rigorous, analytical statesman obsessed with finding the truth.
More than a character, Miguel Ramírez is a ghost. He first appeared in Carla's life in Vietnam, as the security attaché at the Spanish Embassy in Hanoi. Since then, he has operated under dozens of different aliases and has become a shared obsession for Carla and Castaño: a chameleon-like, elusive, and utterly lethal operative, capable of vanishing for months only to reappear in the most unexpected place on the planet.
He has been linked to fund transfers during the 23N coup attempt, but his trail always vanishes. Will Carla be able to track him down and uncover his true plot?
